company profile

Born Free Media is an award winning producer of film and television for local, regional and international markets.  Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, the company prides itself on creating innovative, story-driven content.  Besides producing a significant number of South Africa’s groundbreaking documentaries and drama series, Born Free Media also provides a creative hub that develops magazine, sports and reality shows, commercials, and multimedia campaigns.

Established in January 2005, Born Free Media ranks as a Level-2 Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) company.  Its three key shareholders are Executive Producer Carolyn Carew, Creative Director Khalo Matabane, and Financial Manager Tsholo Mashile.

Born Free Media has won numerous local and international awards (click for details), and is continually producing new work (click for current work).

Many of Born Free Media’s television series have also proven massively popular in terms of sheer viewer numbers and longevity.  90 Plein Street, Scamto Groundbreakers, Play Your Part, and Imagine Afrika have all been long running series on primetime television, both in South Africa and across the African continent.  Imagine Afrika had over 500 million Africa-wide viewers a week.

Born Free Media is renowned for its social-marketing multimedia campaigns, with a client-list that includes Brand South Africa’s “Play Your Part” initiative, loveLife (a youth-orientated campaign for HIV-AIDS awareness, among other issues), and the African Broadcast Media Partnership’s “YOU” campaign against HIV-AIDS, which has run across 38 countries in Africa.

Born Free Media’s short-form commercials portfolio runs to over 200 productions, for brands including Bakers Biscuits, Colgate, Kentucky Fried Chicken, GT Bank and many others.

Born Free Media provides mentoring and on-the-job training to facilitate the growth and transformation of the South African Film and Television Industry.  Since Born Free Media’s inception, it has thoroughly trained more than 50 young people.  The company has also run successful training projects in both drama production (with Dramatic Encounters for new writers, directors and producers) and documentary production (as part of the “I Am Mzansi” legacy project for the 2010 World Cup).

Born Free Media has recently been commissioned by South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation to act as the supervising producer for Women in Film, an initiative designed to train and skill new female directors via the production of a series of half-hour films.
